SHAYNA DUNKELMAN & JAVIER AREAL VÉLEZ
MIRU MIRA
AR-56
The album's title, 'Miru Mira,' means "to see" in Japanese and Spanish consecutively. Senses play a significant role in this daring collaboration between percussionist Shayna Dunkelman and composer Javier Areal Vélez. Combining a playful exploration of the senses with phonological connections between Spanish and Japanese languages, Miru Mira takes inspiration and finds connection through linguistics and sound.
No Plan Press designed these letterpressed j-cards that feature a die cut pattern that plays with the interplay of the paper and cassette as well as overlapping folds, revealing tiny shadows. The cut-outs create a depth and interaction with the tape itself while the letterpress design adds texture and tactility.
Landon Caldwell & Friends
Unity + More UNITY
AR-60
To commemorate the release of Landon Caldwell’s latest, More Unity, Atlantic Rhythms is re-issuing a limited edition double cassette Unity (Atlantic Rhythms, 2020) and More Unity (Atlantic Rhythms, 2022) albums with riso printed j-card. This is the 60th release on Atlantic Rhythms.
For several years, composer Landon Caldwell has iterated on his Unity concept. In essence, Unity looks to composition as a spiritual realm for connection through time and space between different selves and different people. It tries to be everything; composition and improvisation, ensemble and solo, etc. ‘More Unity’ is a continuation of that pursuit and the latest iteration to manifest via Caldwell and an expanded ensemble of collaborators, including Patrick Shiroishi, Thom Nguyen, Yuri Osuka, Mark Tester, Drew Davis, Jordan Allen, and Nick Yeck-Stauffer.
Place and environment are central themes in Caldwell’s work, and Indianapolis has played a huge role in the artist’s approach to his compositions. More Unity is about connection, physical and digital.
The album features two groups, Eternal Husk and Flower Head Ensemble. Eternal Husk tracks were improvised and recorded at State Street Pub, a place that is a cultural epicenter for the Indianapolis freak music community. Flower Head Ensemble was recorded using the Simultaneous System, a method where players recorded independent and ‘blind’ of the other players. The tracks are then cut up and rearranged into a composition. During the Simultaneous System recordings, players were located in Asheville, Los Angeles, and Nagoya. The juxtaposition here of two methods and two groups into a single album was very intentional. The challenge in conceiving and executing More Unity was to create an album with a singular sound that encompassed as many dualities as possible. Those dualities are apparent in not only method & engineering but also in concept. In exploring the intersection between improvisation and composition, Caldwell discovered that they aren’t that different.
ZEKARIAS THOMPSON
GOODNIGHT SHIVA
AR-51
Oakland-based artist and musician Zekarias Thompson’s impressive debut collection arrives in the form of Goodnight Shiva, an album with six meditations that formed, first, from an impetus to listen. The album is about isolation and an attempt to reunite with the body. “A body,” Thompson says, “that I have never known how to define nor been of want, yet has been identified for me so frequently. It is about blackness (in the undefinable sense, and in its expositions).”
No Plan Press designed these letterpressed j-cards that feature a set of two die cut circles. The cut-outs create a depth and interaction with the tape itself while the letterpress design adds texture and tactility to Thompson’s Goodnight Shiva.
