Stephen Becker

Phosphenes & Allegories

AR-57

Brooklyn-based artist Stephen Becker conceived his latest, Phosphenes & Allegories, as a soundtrack to “a silent film that continues to be watched and interpreted by new people in new ways.” And as soundtracks go, Phosphenes & Allegories presents a range of emotions, ambiguities, questions, and soundscapes all united by Becker’s distinctive guitar levitating within. Phosphenes & Allegories oozes with a cinematic warmth. In many ways, that warmth harkens back to Becker’s first encounters with improvisation and “the idea of abandoning it all, creating one’s own language, letting the music flow outward with no required context.”

Landon Caldwell & Friends

More Unity

AR-59

For several years, composer Landon Caldwell has iterated on his Unity concept. In essence, Unity looks to composition as a spiritual realm for connection through time and space between different selves and different people. It tries to be everything; composition and improvisation, ensemble and solo, etc. More Unity is a continuation of that pursuit and the latest iteration to manifest via Caldwell and an expanded ensemble of collaborators, including Patrick Shiroishi, Thom Nguyen, Yuri Osuka, Mark Tester, Drew Davis, Jordan Allen, and Nick Yeck-Stauffer.

The challenge in conceiving and executing More Unity was to create an album with a singular sound that encompassed as many dualities as possible. Those dualities are apparent in not only method & engineering but also in concept. In exploring the intersection between improvisation and composition, Caldwell discovered that they aren’t that different.

Urner

Exits

AR-46

Urner is the moniker of Isaac Pearl, a composer and programmer based in Ridgewood, Queens. Exits, his debut release for Atlantic Rhythms, is the culmination of a year of compositional experimentation, personal growth, and deep introspection. The album’s live improvisations explore the spaces between environmental music, video game soundtracks, and deep listening.

Pearl’s approach to composition is highly influenced by his training in computer science as well as a deep appreciation for the world-building of video games. Exits, according to Pearl, “feels like a checkpoint before I venture outwards into the next phase of my creative practice. It takes ideas that I’ve been working with for years – both musical and process-oriented – and elevates them to a place where I feel ready to release them.”

George Cory Todd

The Other Kind

Todd describes this new album of eight compositions as representing "a psychological breakthrough." Utilizing traditional ambient/glitch textures with a taste for new and evolving inspirations, he explores the beauty and tragedy of the weather of mind.

Zekarias Thompson

GOODNIGHT SHIVA

AR-51

Oakland-based artist and musician Zekarias Thompson’s impressive debut collection arrives in the form of Goodnight Shiva, an album with six meditations that formed, first, from an impetus to listen. The album is about isolation and an attempt to reunite with the body. “A body,” Thompson says, “that I have never known how to define nor been of want, yet has been identified for me so frequently. It is about blackness (in the undefinable sense, and in its expositions).”

Thompson deftly weaves the organic and inorganic on Goodnight Shiva. From emotionally entrancing saxophone to field recordings to drum machine and synth experimentation, Thompson controls a litany of surprises for maximum impact. Goodnight Shiva, as an exploration, is best digested in repeat listens where one can pull at the strands of patience, truth, experience, and poetry. That is, if you listen closely...

Shoeb Ahmad

Breather Loops

AR-52

Shoeb Ahmad conceived of the Breather project during peak lockdown on the Australian continent. Ruminating on a dry season marred by devastating bushfires led Ahmad to start writing the A Body Full Of Tears album. Plunged into isolation and confronting the trauma of environmental degradation and pandemic realities, Ahmad decided to continue exploring and started to create a space for long-form, meditative compositions. That space was also important for processing the new, lockdown realities of working from home and wrangling two homeschooled children.

These loops, when collected together, could be randomized to dovetail in and out of a playlist with a sense of endlessness. These works drew on a sound palette recorded for many previous projects over the years but reshaped and contorted into new forms, many unfamiliar with the artists who performed them with Ahmad. It was an exercise in restraint – adhering to an ambient wallpaper aesthetic for continual respite from the uncertainty we currently live within.

Bu.RE_ & Carlos Ferreira

Momentary Ghosts

AR-49

Momentary Ghosts was developed as an improvisational conversation held between Bu.Re_ & Carlos Ferreira in a shared space separated by 6,000 miles. As a means to overcome this distance, an aural space was fabricated, where sounds could coalesce in the most organic manner.

In this space, the guitar and piano improvisations are pure and candid— words spoken between friends. Very little post-production and overdubs have been added - just a few field recordings and electronic textures to provide color.

Black’s Myths

Blacks’ Myths I & II

AR-47

Atlantic Rhythms presents a special re-issue of the first two Blacks' Myths albums, now available in a double cassette edition. Blacks’ Myths, is the inimitable rhythm section featuring bassist Luke Stewart and drummer Warren “Trae” Crudup III.

From The Wire:
"On the meditative and majestic 'Upper South' a repetitive 17 note bass line sails through choppy waves of subtle polyrhythms at a steady clip. Its companion 'Lower South' is marked by a melancholic, weighty meandering. The range of tones that Stewart gets from his bass is intriguing. Here, he plays with harmonics whose haloes vibrate outward through a short delay. Stacking these patterns over a long loop gives rise to sonic structures that grow like crystals within the interference patterns. 'Black Flight' is a sentient fog in a realm of visceral stillness, with pacing so restrained that when the drums finally enter, they arrive like a staircase rolling down from the heavens."

GUS Callahan

FROM SUN TO SOUND

AR-48

Gus Callahan is a sound designer, composer, and audio engineer. From Sun to Sound, his latest for Atlantic Rhythms, employs texture, collage, and space to build worlds of sound rooted in both ambient experimentation and adventurous arrangements. On From Sun to Sound Callahan, Callahan sublimely introduces us to the symbiotic sounds of an imaginary geography that balance sonic exploration and minimal pop.

Starting as a loose collection of fragments, sketches, and sound experiments, From Sun to Sound slowly and methodically took shape in a piecemeal recording process. Callahan methodically refined and fused those elements, incorporating the composer’s experience as a sound designer for both film and award-winning gaming apps.

From Sun to Sound will be available as a limited edition cassette with a Riso printed j-card.

Evan Zierk

Endless Gesture

AR-43

Endless Gesture, Evan Zierk's second release on Atlantic Rhythms, expands on the sonic approaches he developed in his 2017 debut, Drifting/Bending, using stochasticism as a means of embodying the serendipitous sound-moments that emerge out of soundscape listening. He uses both real and digitally-mimicked acoustic sound combined with relatively subtle digital signal processing as a means of extending sounds into imperfect digital representations of themselves. His work aims to approach music as something that is defined not necessarily by its own structures but rather by the relationship between sound and listener or composer.

Endless Gesture presents Zierk’s unique approach to sonic exploration through chance, endurance, and emotion. A limited edition, purple vinyl LP will be available in August 2021.

Jackson Ryland

A Million Questions

AR-41

A Million Questions is the latest full length from DC-based producer Jackson Ryland (Superabundance, Rush Plus, 1432 R). The album’s eight hazy explorations comfortably flow from bliss and hiss ambience to hyped-up and hard charging experimental techno. A gossamer-like film is present through it all — part of the charm and pull of A Million Questions. Ryland’s sensibilities reflect a pathfinding quality — that of a perpetual sound tinkerer diving into the recording process in search of answers.

Amy Reid

Isolated Bliss Remix EP 2

AR-44

Two new interpretations of "Water Talks" from Amy Reid’s transportive Atlantic Rhythms debut, Isolated Bliss. Reid's original slowly weaves a sonic collage -- building an environment via layers of placid tones, sonic pads, and aquatic samples.

Genie’s begins with a nod to the original's layered soundscape. A breakneck, stuttering drum pattern propels the lushness forward while incorporating arpeggiation and chopped vocal samples. Graffititech's version detonates with breakneck club percussion, but zeroes in on the austere quality of Reid's original composition. The combination of melancholy chords and rapid-fire BPMS carves a rare experimental club music experience.

Dura

MERCURY

AR-39

Mercury finds Dura (Mattson Ogg) continuing their exploration of interior and exterior spaces. Even as we try to orient ourselves, navigate or slow down, everything continues to move and cycle around us. With Mercury, Dura interprets our spatial structures through a prism of acoustic processes and performer interactions. The results form lightly distracted and oblique inner monologues rendered via guitar and delay into colorful voids across two tape sides.

Included as a digital bonus is a long form meditation on the texture of the release. "Mercury (Octaves and Grains)" further slows down the source material, smearing, reinforcing and ruminating on its timbre.

Jeff Zeigler & Dash Lewis

Eraserhood

AR-36

Atlantic Rhythms is very excited to announce Eraserhood, the new release from Jeff Zeigler & Dash Lewis. Zeigler owns and operates Uniform Recording and is a producer, engineer, and multi-instrumentalist from Philadelphia, PA. Synthesist, multi-instrumentalist, and vocalist Dash Lewis is based in Richmond, VA. The two collaborators are both prolific musicians in their own right, steeped in their respective scenes.

The Eraserhood section of Philadelphia (aka Callowhill) is where, until recently, Zeigler lived and ran his studio for 13 years. Once a post-industrial inspiration for David Lynch’s Eraserhead, the neighborhood is now on the other side of a condo and shiny shared workspaces boom. Jeff and Dash wrote, recorded, and mixed the album at the old studio - one of the last projects to come out of that incarnation of Zeigler’s studio. The two spent hours and hours in that version of Uniform, both as friends and collaborators, so they decided to honor that space and neighborhood by naming the album Eraserhood.

George Cory Todd

That Dark Electric LP

AR-31

That Dark Electric, Todd’s second full length release on Atlantic Rhythms, explores the ebb and flow to things - a dark chaos, contrasted by moments of deep serenity. The music captures the space between extremes and embodies that moment – floating in oblivion, with the electricity of the heavens all around you, constructing new worlds within limbo.

Since moving to California in 2018, George Cory Todd fixated on the change in landscape: sprawling mountainous horizons, deep rivers, light moving through the forest. Backpacking trips connecting to nature brought him closer to making sense of his new geography — a cross country move from Brooklyn to Berkeley – in a way he never previously considered. That Dark Electric, Todd’s latest effort, captures the sound of relocation. New job, new city, new commute – all building a new relationship to untrodden possibility for George Cory Todd.

That Dark Electric will be released as a limited edition, translucent tan LP.

George Cory Todd

Not Even The Ghosts They Were

AR-38

Not Even The Ghosts They Were,” the second single from George Cory Todd’s forthcoming album That Dark Electric, encapsulates the composer’s sound and musical process. Three remixes from Haldeman, HALCYON, and Omar Akrouche highlight the second of two remix EPs commemorating the release of That Dark Electric.

Release Date: August 5, 2020

Evan Zierk - Life in Cue

AR-33

“Life in Cue” is the opening track of Endless Gesture, Evan Zierk’s forthcoming album, which will be released by Atlantic Rhythms this summer.

At the beginning of a recording session at Figure8 Recording in Brooklyn, New York, Zierk gathered a pallet of sounds from a collection of synthesizers. But what was initially meant to be a diverse sampling quickly became focused on a single patch. By opening and closing the filter of a Juno 60, Zierk isolated the low-end frequencies of the arpeggiating synth-patch, creating the fixed beating that serves as the backing for “Life in Cue.” Layering percussion and patches from a Korg DW8000, “Life in Cue” creates a sequence of upward inflections, as if posing a question.

Performed live in January 2015, these three pieces document the second of a special two-night set for Lindsay, a No Wave legend, at the revered Queens venue Trans-Pecos.
